What is Turning Point Community Programs?
Turning Point Community Programs is a non-profit mental health agency providing psychiatric services, support, employment, housing and advocacy to people with disabilities and their families.  Turning Point serves close to 3,000 people experiencing mental illness annually. This is a client-driven organization committed to helping people with psychiatric and emotional disabilities to achieve their own goals.


How can I access Turning Point's Adult and Children's programs in Sacramento County?
Contact the Adult Access Team at Sacramento County Mental Health or call (916) 875-1055. If appropriate, referral to a Regional Support Team or other services may be made.

Contact the Children's Access Team at (916) 875-9980. Participants in Turning Point Community Programs must first be screened by the county.

Stanislaus County residents can call the Warm Line
at (209) 558-4600 when:

  • They are having a hard time making it through the day - but they are not in a crisis.
  • They could use peer staff to listen and provide effective feedback to help them explore options regarding a problem they are facing.
  • They need some support, and a brief conversation with a Warm Line staff will provide assistance, support, and resources toward recovery.

How does Turning Point help people with mental illness?

Turning Point leads the way in offering consumer-driven mental health services, with an emphasis on treatment choice and self empowerment. Programs aid adults, youth aged 18 - 25, children and families.


How is Turning Point funded?

Sacramento County's Department of Mental Health provides 78.5% of Turning Point's funding.  Stanislaus County Mental Health provides 9.4%  and Alta Regional provides 11.25 %.


Why does Turning Point need donations?
Donations allow Turning Point to give members opportunites that are important for recovery but aren't always funded.  Bus passes, clothing, and other basic necessities are also needed.


How does Turning Point help the mentally ill?
Turning Point's mission is to provide services to people with disabilities and their families, including mental health services, support, employment housing and advocacy.

Prior to 1988, California institutionalized many of its severely and persistently mentally ill adults who were not fortunate enough to have private insurance. Turning Point took a leading role in taking adults out of the locked mental health facilities throughout the State and integrating them back into our community.


Are there clearly defined outcome measures for these programs?
Positive outcomes include reduced hospitalizations and incarcerations, getting clients off conservatorship, working, and living semi-independent or independently.


How is Turning Point managed?
Turning Point is successfully managed by an educated and informed Board of Directors, and Chief Executive, Operating, and Financial Officers.  With Administrative support through a Director of Human Resources, Communications Director and MIS Department Managers, our management team supports our mission and goals using extensive experience and knowledge. Adult and Children's Program Directors are highly skilled with extensive backgrounds in mental health.


What can I do to help Turning Point?
Your contribution of funds is most welcome and appreciated. Turning Point is a non-profit organization and is supported by government funding, grants, and support from the community.

To Donate: Your donations allow us to provide opportunities needed for recovery, but not covered by other funding sources. 


What does the Board of Directors do?
Becoming a board member for Turning Point Community Programs is a chance to make a real difference. The Board of Directors provides oversight for the use of public funds and the direction of the organization.

Through the use of a committee structure, the board provides professional, business and strategic advice and consent for the policies of the organization. In doing so, the Board assures that public funds are spent in the most efficient and productive manner so that the highest quality care and services are provided to those in need
.


Do I have to be a mental health professional to be a member of the Board of Directors?
No. In fact, the Board of Directors prefers to draw its members from a wide range of professions and backgrounds.


What would be expected of me as a member of the Board of Directors?
The Turning Point Board of Directors is made up of dedicated professionals who participate in at least one committee and attend both monthly committee meetings and quarterly board of director meetings. Committee meetings are often 1-2 hours long and are usually arranged as working lunches. Meetings are held on an quarterly basis and board members are encouraged to visit the various facilities on a annual basis and to attend staff functions.

Typically, the path to becoming a board member is through participation in one or more of Turning Point's Board Committees which gives new people the chance to learn about the public administration of mental health services, and the on-going issues that face the organization.


After one year as a committee member one may be nominated to serve as a board member. Occasionally, the board by-passes this committee membership rule and will place new volunteers directly on the board.


How long is my commitment?
Board members are asked to participate for at least one year, but may decide to serve for much longer periods. Usually, a member of the Board holds various positions from committee chairperson to board officers.


Will I come into contact with clients?
There are times during the year that board tours the different facilities and programs.Many of our programs are clinical settings which serve more than 1,000 clients while other programs have more of a family feel to them. Our Board meetings are open to the public including clients and their families.


What is the relationship between our Committees and the Board of Director?
Each committee is made up of at least two Board members and as many committee members as deemed necessary to accomplish the goals of that committee. Committees meet on a regular basis and provide information and advice to the Board of Directors on a wide range of topics concerning Turning Point.

The Executive Committee is composed of board officers and the Chief Executive Officer of the Agency. This committee manages the business of the Board and can take action on matters between regular meetings of the entire board.


How can I become a member of the Board of Directors?
Typically, the path to becoming a board member is through participation in one or more of Turning Point's committees. Serving on a committee gives new people the chance to learn about the public administration of mental health services, the various political realities of being a non-profit that is funded by state and federal resources, and the on-going issues that face the organization.



Do members of the Board of Directors get paid?
No. Under California law, members of a not-for-profit board of directors are not allowed to be compensated for their efforts. However, we do reimburse certain out-of-pocket expenses you may incur while participating in board events.
