What does the Board of Directors do?

The Board of  Directors is a policy driven board which leaves the day-to-day management of the programs and services to the senior management of the organization.  It is the goal of the Board of Directors to provide vigilant oversight to the use of public funds and the direction of the organization to better serve those experiencing mental illness.

Through the use of a committee structure, the board provides professional, business and strategic advice and consent for the policies of the organization.  In doing so, the Board of Directors assures that public funds are spent in the most efficient and productive manner to provide the highest quality care and services to those in need.

Why should I volunteer with Turning Point?

The Board of Directors seeks members of the community who have skills and interests that align with our mission and goals.
The time and effort dedicated to helping our clients is rewarded through the knowledge that your efforts help save lives.

Do I have to be a mental health professional to be a member of the Board of Directors?

No.  In fact, the Board of Directors  prefers to draw its members from a wide range of professions and backgrounds.   Through our efforts, we provide advice and consent to policy matters for the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operations Officer and Accountant. Diversity within the board enhances its ability to make good and sound policy decisions.

What would be expected of me as a member of the Board of Directors?

The Turning Point Board of Directors is made up of professional, dedicated persons who live in counties where Turning Point manages community programs.  Board members participate in at least one committee and attend both monthly committee meetings and quarterly board of director meetings.  Committee meetings are often 1-2 hours long and are usually arranged as working lunches.  Board of Director meetings take place on pre-arranged evenings, on an quarterly basis and can last from 2-3 hours.  In addition, board members are encouraged to visit the various facilities on a annual basis and to attend any staff functions (e.g. Holiday Party, Company Picnic, Awards Ceremony's) they may be inclined to attend.

The most important expectation of any board member is to have a genuine desire to work with the providers and consumers of mental health services in our community.  Bringing your personal talents and skills to help in our common mission is the most important quality of any member of the board of directors.   We are all aware of the sacrifices that are being made by volunteering your time to help others and our board wants this to be a satisfying experience for each of its members.

 How long is my commitment?

Board members are asked to participate for at least one year, but may decide to serve for much longer periods.  Usually, a member of the Board holds various positions from committee chairperson to board officers.  It is each member's commitment to help us each realize our personal volunteer goals. We all want to make your volunteer efforts personally rewarding so that you will continue to honor Turning Point with your efforts as long as possible.

Will I come into contact with clients?

There are times during the year that board tours the different facilities and programs and will come into contact with the clients.  Many of our programs are clinical settings which serve more than 1,000 clients while other programs have more of a family feel to them.  Our Board meetings are open to the public including clients and their families.  The more you are involved in Turning Point, the more likely you will have at least some contact with our clients.

How can I become a member of the Board of Directors?

Typically, the path to becoming a board member is through participation in one or more of Turning Point's Board Committees.  These are small groups of individuals which meet usually on a monthly basis to carry out various projects, monitoring and report functions.  This gives new people the chance to learn about the public administration of mental health services, the various political realities of being a non-profit that is funded by state and federal resources, and the on-going issues that face the organization.

After one year as a committee member you may be nominated to serve as a board member.  Upon a majority vote of the board, you will become its next board member.  On occasion, the board by-passes this committee membership rule and will place new volunteers directly on the board.

A commitment to support fundraising is also expected.

Do members of the Board of Directors get paid?

No.  Under California law, members of a not-for-profit board of directors are not allowed to be compensated for their efforts.  However, we do reimburse certain out-of-pocket expenses you may incur while participating in board events.
